COMPOP 31.3 - POST-JKPOP HYPERWAVE

"In 2005, Buttress O'Kneel invented 'Hyperpop', a term that sat dormant in the mainstream for more than a decade before finally becoming a recognised genre. In 2021, she has invented Hyperwave. And not just any old hyperwave either - O'Kneel's hyperwave is distinctly post-JKpop hyperwave. Who knows how long it will take the mainstream to catch up to this one?

Whether or not the mainstream ever catches up with Buttress O'Kneel has never been her concern - no, she's here to cut up the present and give us the future, whether we want it or not. On Post-JKPop Hyperwave, the future seems to involve a kaleidoscope of sources, approaches, and end results. Some tracks are simple mashups; some are AI-controlled processing jobs, with those very mashups used as source material; some seem to be simple 'octaversions' of familiar songs (a process we first discovered on O'Kneel's 'Octamidi Megawave' album from 2020); others seem to be complete algorithmic randomisations. And some appear to be all of these options at once. As with many of O'Kneel's genrefications, the exact definition of what 'post-JKpop hyperwave' might actually be is slippery and amorphous.

Like many recognised genre terms, it may end up being completely meaningless (think about the enormous stylistic differences between Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, all of whom were/are considered 'grunge') - or it may end up being definable only by stepping back and looking at the forest rather than the individual trees.

Or, perhaps most realistically, we will not know exactly what Post-JKPop Hyperwave actually means for another decade or two, when the seeds Buttress has planted for us today finally sprout, and the swollen fruit plops down into the eager hands of the mainstream of the future?"

about

Buttress O'Kneel Australia

“Words like "mashup" and "remix" don't really do justice to Buttress O'Kneel's method - Top 40 pop crap gets sliced, diced, and tossed into a dizzying, exciting hardcore electro stew. Compared to other djs who timidly drop a Vanilla Ice acapella over a Chemical Bros intro just to move a dance floor, O'Kneel shreds copyrights with a blood-curdling vehemence. Smash the state!”
