about

"After immersing herself in existential experiments in extended stretching (see "Heaven", "Superstition", "Neverending", and "Immortal" as excellent examples), Ms O'Kneel began to explore the concept of extreme stretching in a new way. Instead of merely stretching a song to an extreme degree, Buttress decided to condense the song - that is, speed it up without altering the pitch - first. This sped up, and much shorter, piece was then stretched back to the original length of the source material, using either Paul's Stretching Tool, or the much clunkier time shifting capabilities of Audition. The results would then be the same length and pitch as the original song, and yet...

The results are startling: songs that are immediately recognisable, and yet estranged, as their notes and tones exist as before, but any sudden sounds - drums, stabs, vocal plosives, etc - are blurred into granular grindings, or wafty reverse-reverb cloudiness. Familiar (and unexpectedly eclectic) songs are transformed into dense dreamscapes of surprise and memory, interrogating the boundaries between nostalgia and reality.

Ms O'Kneel christened the results of her new technique "pop smears". Lie back and enjoy."

about

Buttress O'Kneel Australia

“Words like "mashup" and "remix" don't really do justice to Buttress O'Kneel's method - Top 40 pop crap gets sliced, diced, and tossed into a dizzying, exciting hardcore electro stew. Compared to other djs who timidly drop a Vanilla Ice acapella over a Chemical Bros intro just to move a dance floor, O'Kneel shreds copyrights with a blood-curdling vehemence. Smash the state!”
