about

"On the second volume of her 'live CD manipulation plus drummer' concept, Buttress O'Kneel teams up with the hard-hitting Jen Tait, currently playing with 'mindfulness metal' band 'Intrinsic Light', solo guitar-loop project 'Squirrel Pancake', and free-improv duets 'Ili Pika' and 'Is There A Hotline?', although probably best known from her many years simultaneously drumming, singing, and playing keys for 'Go Genre Everything'. Ms Tait's pounding rhythms provide the perfect base for Ms O'Kneel's warped and disconcerting plunderphonic fragments to be thrown around over the top of, like so much confetti, or rice, or shrapnel. What were once perfectly decent pop songs, or jazz tunes, or (in one case) death metal songs, become ghastly abstract messes, torn into pieces and sprinkled, smeared, or just dumped unceremoniously onto Tait's muscular and texturally-varied drumming, seemingly revelling in the difficult and the profane. Prince, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd and more are treated with glitchy stuttering disdain, while battle-drums warn enemies that this pair of middle-aged riot-grrls mean business. Is this activism, art, vandalism, or war? Or is it just more music? At this stage, it's difficult to tell."

about

Buttress O'Kneel Australia

“Words like "mashup" and "remix" don't really do justice to Buttress O'Kneel's method - Top 40 pop crap gets sliced, diced, and tossed into a dizzying, exciting hardcore electro stew. Compared to other djs who timidly drop a Vanilla Ice acapella over a Chemical Bros intro just to move a dance floor, O'Kneel shreds copyrights with a blood-curdling vehemence. Smash the state!”
