about

The concept was a simple one: Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix jammed together several times, but never got to record together - what would such a recording sound like? Almost certainly nothing like this.

(They actually wanted Paul McCartney to join them on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. Davis and Hendrix even went so far as to send McCartney a telegram asking him to join them and Williams for recording sessions, but it never happened.)

Seeing as Miles and Jimi never got to record together, Buttress O'Kneel and John Jacobs decided to record together instead, improvising a bunch of strange electronic glitchery, but with each of them playing either exclusively Jimi Hendrix or Miles Davis music as source material (taking turns to "play the Jimi" or "play the Miles" for each improv session). The resulting recordings were then left on Ms O'Kneel's computer for almost exactly two years, gathering virtual dust, but not quite forgotten. Finally, at the very tail end of 2016, Buttress took these jams, edited them down, mixed them 'Bitches Brew'-style into longer pieces, then cut them down into shorter pieces again, and distributed them over two discs-worth of material. This is Disc 2, but may actually be slightly better than Disc 1.

John Jacobs decided the project needed its own name, and suggested the name "AS IF" - alluding to the fantasy/parallel universes aspect of the concept, but also alluding to the sarcastic Australian slang phrase "AS IF", meaning "that is highly unlikely"/"I don't believe you".

DOES NOT REALLY SOUND MUCH LIKE EITHER JIMI OR MILES.

about

Buttress O'Kneel Australia

“Words like "mashup" and "remix" don't really do justice to Buttress O'Kneel's method - Top 40 pop crap gets sliced, diced, and tossed into a dizzying, exciting hardcore electro stew. Compared to other djs who timidly drop a Vanilla Ice acapella over a Chemical Bros intro just to move a dance floor, O'Kneel shreds copyrights with a blood-curdling vehemence. Smash the state!”
